The Children Together Annual Conference for Parents and Educators, Building Inclusive Classrooms. Thursday afternoon will feature eight workshops repeated in two sessions so that each person will be able to attend two different workshops. Topics include Be a S.T.A.R! - part of the Conscious Discipline program by Dr. Becky Bailey; Literacy Using Songs; Explore More, Play More; Creating Electronic Books Using Intellitools Classroom Suite; Fostering Healthy Attachment in Children; Helping Your Wiggly Learner; Brain Gym...Never Say "Just Focus" Again; and, in a double session lasting all evening, Understanding the Needs of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Friday's post-conference will feature Behavioral Consultant Sharon Weiss presenting Handling a Child's Challenges with Competence and Compassion in the morning, and Victoria Brown and Sarah Pleydell presenting Integrating the Arts in Early Childhood: Natural Connections to Language and Literacy in the afternoon. When we saw a listing for Sweeney Todd at Mount Vernon Community Children’s Theatre we decided to make it a family evening. When we saw Narnia, by the same group, the children proclaimed it the best play that they had seen, which is more impressive when you know that one of them sees a stage play at least once a month, usually taking turns going with me, sometimes two at a time. So the two who have not yet grown into surly teens accompanied me, first to Primo’s one of our favorite restaurants In the Belle Haven area, and on to the show at Heritage Presbyterian Church on Fort Hunt Road. ...
Cora Kelly Holds Annual SCIMATECH Fair
Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology will hold its 16th annual Science, Math and Technology Fair (SCIMATECH) on Wednesday. The event, which will run from 7 to 8 p.m. at the school, 36showcases the outstanding work that students in kindergarten through fifth grade have done in science, math and technology. Visitors will find students teaching math games and participating in group science projects as well as sharing individual science projects. Students also will share Hyperstudio and PowerPoint presentations focusing on cross-curriculum projects. SCIMATECH Fair is an annual school-wide event in which students share science, math and technology experiences with the Cora Kelly community. Its purpose is to foster an appreciation of the academic focus of the school and to enhance the curriculum. The interactive nature of the fair allows attendees to learn by doing and students to learn by teaching. The SCIMATECH Fair promotes an understanding of the roles science, math and technology play in everyone’s lives. All members of the public are invited to attend this event, which includes games and prizes.
