The Fire Department received a call reporting a house fire at 403 Hume Avenue. First arriving units reported fire showing from second floor windows. The fire was quickly knocked down, but the house was damaged significantly and was condemned by the fire marshal's office.

Police Arrest Murder Suspect

Alexandria police detectives, with the assistance of the Capitol Area Regional Fugitive Task Force of the US Marshals Service, arrested Gerald Dwayne Curtis, 42, of no fixed address, for the murder of Ricardo Lloyd Cherry. A motive for the murder remains under investigation. Mr. Cherry, a 29 year-old Alexandria man, was found suffering from a stab wound to the chest at 930 North Henry Street around 8:30 p.m. on July 19. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital. Curtis is charged with First Degree Murder Detectives are encouraging anyone who may have been in the area of the 900 block of North Henry Street in the evening hours of July 19, to call 703.838.4711. ...
Elizabeth Riddle Receives Alexandria Jaycees’ Public Service Award
Elizabeth Macon Riddle, Ph.D., received the 2007 George Talmadge Webber Outstanding Public Service Award during the Alexandria Jaycees’ annual Community Appreciation Night held on Jan. 23. Riddle is one of five outstanding young City employees honored by the Jaycees for exceptional achievement or contribution in their chosen field or fields, organization or community. According to the creed of the Jaycees, the recipients of the Community Appreciation award demonstrate that “service to humanity is the best work of life.” “The young men and women selected for these awards over the past 60 years have shown exceptional commitment to Alexandria’s citizens,” said Jaycee President Lea Anne Chapman, “and remind each of us that no problem is too difficult when handled with ingenuity, courage and determination.” Riddle is the instructional technology coordinator for the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS), where she has worked for six years. She serves on a Leadership Committee that is creating a group called Give Back Alexandria. The mission will be to encourage Alexandria professionals to become involved with philanthropic efforts to support Alexandria youth and families. Riddle also is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, a professional honorary society of women educators providing scholarships for women who want to advance their professional interests in education.
